Done well, Tatmeen fades into the background. Done badly, it slows your receiving, holds up your counter and leaves gaps that show up at audit time. Here’s what you need to know to get it right.
What Tatmeen is
Tatmeen, from the Arabic تطمين (“assurance”), is the UAE’s national track-and-trace system for medicines. The Ministry of Health and Prevention set it up by ministerial decree in June 2021, working with Abu Dhabi’s DoH and the DHA, and gave the whole supply chain until 13 December 2022 to register and start reporting. Each pack carries its own unique identity, and every business that handles it records what happened to it.
The result is a single national record of where every pack has been. Regulators can trace a recalled batch quickly, and your patients can trust that the medicine you hand them is genuine. It’s a licensing matter too: MOHAP asks for proof of Tatmeen registration when you renew a facility licence.
Why it matters for your business
- Patient safety: counterfeit, expired and recalled packs can be stopped before they ever reach a patient.
- Faster recalls: the system shows exactly which pharmacies received an affected batch, so you’re not left guessing.
- Supply visibility: regulators can see stock across the country and spot shortages early.
- A clean market: packs diverted outside the official chain stand out, which protects legitimate businesses like yours.
The building blocks
Tatmeen is built on GS1 global standards, the same family used by track-and-trace systems around the world.
| Element | What it does |
|---|---|
| GS1 DataMatrix | The 2D barcode on each pack, holding the GTIN, serial number, batch and expiry |
| Serial number | Gives each pack its own identity, so no two packs are the same |
| SSCC | Identifies a case or pallet, so a whole shipment can be scanned at once |
| GLN | Identifies each of your sites, such as a warehouse or a pharmacy branch |
If you run a warehouse or distribution operation, aggregation is the feature that will make or break your day. Packs are linked to the case they’re packed in, and cases to the pallet. That means you can receive a whole pallet with a single scan, then break it down and track each pack as it moves on to your branches.
Who reports what
- Manufacturers and importers commission each serialised pack into the system and aggregate packs into cases and pallets.
- Distributors and warehouses record what they receive and what they ship, often splitting pallets for different customers.
- Pharmacies and hospitals record receipt of stock, then record the dispense when a pack is handed to a patient.
- Anyone holding stock decommissions packs that are damaged, expired, recalled or destroyed.
For your pharmacy, the dispense scan is the one that matters most. Once a pack is recorded as dispensed, it can’t be dispensed again anywhere in the country.
What to look for in your software
Tatmeen adds steps to receiving and dispensing, so the right software makes all the difference. When you’re comparing systems, check that it:
- Reads the full DataMatrix and records serial, batch and expiry automatically.
- Reports receipt and dispense as part of your normal workflow, with no separate app.
- Warns your staff instantly if a pack is recalled, expired or already dispensed.
- Handles aggregated shipments and transfers between your branches and a central warehouse.
- Keeps your counter running if the connection drops, and catches up afterwards.
Tatmeen without the hassle, with HSA
We built Tatmeen into our products so your team doesn’t have to think twice about it. Our pharmacy point of sale, EzPOS, and our warehouse and multi-branch inventory system, eInventory, are both integrated with Tatmeen.
eInventory takes care of the supply-chain side: receiving aggregated shipments, moving stock between your warehouse and branches, and handling returns and recalls. At the counter, EzPOS records the Tatmeen dispense as your pharmacist scans the pack for the sale. No extra step, no second screen, no slowing down the queue.
Tatmeen reached our customers the same way every regulatory change does: in the normal release, at no extra cost. Book a demo and see how smoothly it fits into your day.
